Character

The Booted Bantam or Sablepoot Bantam is a wonderful small bantam chicken. They have a lovely temperament which make them great pets for children. Although not as robust as a Wyandotte or a Pekin when being handled, they are sturdy and a fairly hardy little bird. They are inquisitive and fun but can be a little shy of big groups or people they do not know. They are easy to tame and once tame they will be part of the family and will love cuddles and fuss. They are very calm and laid back, they are the most easy-going of birds much like the big friendly Cochins and will be happy chickening about with you in your garden and they won’t ruin your lawn or flower beds.

Suitability

Booted Bantam hens are very well suited to a small environment, they would not be a great bird in a large free roaming set up as they have fully feathered feet and legs so a well cropped lawn or a paved/gravel garden area is ideal. They have a gentle and very chilled nature and mix well with other breeds. You will need to look out for bully birds with them, as they are not the type to cause a fight but can be bullied if you put with a larger number of bully birds. As with Polish bantams they should always be in pairs at least and not mixed with big hybrids ever! They can go with some of our gentle large pure breeds with no problems such as Cochins or Brahmas. They can manage a house wiht a gentle ramp.

History

Sablepoot Chickens or Booted Bantams as they are also known originated in the Netherlands. There is evidence documented that the Booted Bantam was being bread in the Netherlands as far back as the 16th century, making the Sablepoot Bantam one of the oldest breeds in Europe. They are named Booted Bantam due to their heavy leg and feet feathering which gives the illusion their wearing trousers and booties. They are now bread in the UK mainly for showing and pets, although pretty good layers they are not a utility bird. They can be found in over 11 different colour variations including lemon millefleur and lavender! They will lay you up to 150 little white eggs a year and have a life expectancy of up to 10 years.
