Hybrid Legbar

Legbar Hybrids are perfect for roaming in a more open setting, but can be equally as happy in a smaller back garden provided they have plenty enrichment, grass time and space. They are a medium sized bird so need less room than a regular hybrid chicken, but will peck and be destructive if enclosed for too long. They will scratch about so no more than 2 is recommended for a small space. They love to forage so the perfect setting would be a large walk-in run for when you’re not around, as they can fly, with lots of space to forage outdoors safely. You can use electric fencing to create safe areas for foraging if you have a big space. Hybrids can fly and would like a roosting bar for sleeping at night, they can also manage a house with a ladder or a ramp. Hybrids will need extra supplements to keep them laying well, due to their ability to mass produce eggs they can burn out easily so will need extra vitamins, calcium tonics and a good quality laying pellet feed.

Hybrid Chickens come in many varieties and are usually cross-bred from different pure breeds such as the Light Sussex, Rhode Island Red and Leghorn. The Legbar is a Hybrid bred with the pure breed Legbar giving fun blue eggs and docile natures. They are not easily stressed and are generally very confident, friendly birds. Hybrid chicken development is quite new and only started in the 1950’s, before the hybrid chicken was created most farmers and poultry keepers kept pure breeds. Hybrids have been created to lay prolific numbers of eggs, but their egg production is short lived, and they tend to slow down after about 3 years of laying. Due to the cross breeding 10% of Hybrids may not give the desired egg colour, for 100% true egg colour opt for a pure breed.
