Introduction to Faverolles Silkie Chickens

Faverolles are a lovely large pure breed hen, they have gentle natures and are suitable with most other breeds. They do not bully but can be bullied if with more aggressive bigger hens. They make wonderful pets for children as they are robust, friendly and like cuddles. They have cute, fluffy beard muffs and feathered feet, they are one of the few chickens to have 5 toes. They lay pink tinted eggs, up to about 180-200 a year and are well suited to both back gardens and free ranging situations.

Character

Faverolles are very sweet natured big and fluffy hens, they are cuddly and friendly and like people. They can be a little timid to begin with and may take some time to settle, but once you’ve gained their trust, they are very affectionate. They are a large breed but are not aggressive, as such they can be mixed with lots of different breeds including delicate bantams. They make good mothers and can be a little broody but nowhere near as broody as a Silkie or a Pekin Bantam, they can fly but are not flighty.

Faverolles are a large pure breed utility hen, originally bread for meat and egg production they are now a rare fancy breed and make wonderful back garden buddies. They lay very well for a pure breed and can offer up to 200 medium sized pink/cream, coloured eggs a year, they are also a good winter and early season layer. They like to forage and free range but are also good in back gardens and smaller set ups due to their docile natures. They won’t ruin your garden and will enjoy spending time with you, they are easily hand tamed although it can take patience as they take time to trust. A great all-round hen for pets, layers and will make a wonderful addition to any flock. They can fly so will need an enclosed run when you are not with them, they can also manage a house up a ramp or a ladder and may like to roost at night.

History

The Faverolles is a French hen originally a large utility hen for egg and meat production. The breed was developed in the 1860s in north-central France, in the vicinity of the villages of Houdan and Faverolles. The breed was given the name of the latter village and the singular is thus also Faverolles, not Faverolle. The final “s” is silent in French. Today the breed is rare and raised mostly for exhibition and novelty. Faverolles are good-sized chickens with a beard muff, feathered legs and feet, and a fifth toe. Males are straw-coloured with reddish brown and black markings. The Faverolles can be a good winter and early season laying hen they can offer up to 200 medium sized cream/pink eggs a year, they are not overly broody but can go broody on occasion, they have a life expectancy of 8-10 years.
