They are inquisitive and friendly, they are a true bantam and are one of the most aesthetically stunning hens but not only are they beautiful they are fun and rewarding to keep, they are cheeky and friendly and will like your company, it may take a little longer to gain their trust, but once used to you will enjoy your company.

Suitability

The Belgian Bantam Watermael is a rare true bantam and can be delicate, they are not suited to a large outside area and will need an aviary style set up, walk in run or a well-maintained garden. They are predominantly a show hen and although can be kept in a back garden set up you will need to ensure a good quality house and a covered run area so they do not get too wet or mucky. They make lovely garden companions, a chicken enthusiasts dream, easily tamed once trust is gained through regular handling with care, be wary mixing with any hybrids or assertive bantam breeds they need to be in breed pairs. They love to perch so ensuring a good amount of enrichment in their aviary or run is essential for their wellbeing they can manage a house with a ladder or ramp.

History

The Barbue de Watermael was created more than a hundred years ago, it’s unclear exactly which foundational breeds gave rise to this tiny chicken but they were first found in Belgium in the early 20th century.  The breed has a unique 3 spine rose comb, a full beard, a crest, and a colour palette for its plumage that is extraordinary in its diversity. They are a true bantam and quite rare in the Uk making them a perfect ornamental breed for a chicken enthusiast looking for something a little different. They are not a fantastic laying hen offering up to 100 small white eggs a year, they are known for being broody and make wonderful mothers and broodies for hatching. They have a life expectancy of anywhere from 5-10 years.
