Rumples Araucana are lovely, friendly birds, they are naturally inquisitive and like to be around people, however, they should not be put with delicate bantams. They are happy free roaming foragers and very robust. They come in many colours and lay stunning blue/green tinted eggs. They can also come with cheek tufts and beard muffs.

This breed will be suited with most other breeds, however, some breeds can bully if in greater numbers or put with more delicate breeds, this breed can also manage a mixed flock with larger hybrids or pure breeds.

This breed will be very inquisitive and friendly; however, they can seem a little aloof as they do not like being handled too much and will be self-sufficient, they prefer to chicken about doing their own thing.

Character

Araucanas are a friendly and inquisitive chicken, they are very robust and hardy as a breed making them great for first time poultry keepers. They are confident and like to forage, Araucana are docile by nature but can be a little destructive if bored, they like people and will be happy to potter about the garden with you. They are not a cuddly chicken, they prefer not to be over handled, but can be hand tamed to take treats from your palm and will be comfortable in your company over time, they can be flighty until they get to know you.

Suitability

Rumples Araucana are a busy breed, they like to free roam and forage, they can be suited to smaller spaces but would need lots of grass time or run enrichment, they can fly and enjoy perching and would love a chicken swing, they will need a secure enclosure when you’re not around. They will be happy with you in the garden, but can get destructive and pecky when bored, prolonged periods of confinement would not be good without lots of room and run enrichment. They are able to climb ladders and ramps and like to roost at night.

History

The Rumples Araucana originates from the Araucia Indians of Northern Chile. There are two distinct breeds; the Rumples Araucana and the Araucana. Many people confuse the two, due to both laying blue eggs, but they are separate breeds. The Rumples has no tail or parsons nose and are best known for their facial feathering (tufts). They are good laying hens offering up to 180 medium spearmint blue eggs a year, they have an average life expectancy of about 8 years.
